Requirements
  • A master's degree in Library Science, a Master of Library and Information Science, or a graduate degree in a related field.
  • One to two years of job-related work experience is preferred; other combinations of education and experience may be substituted.
  • Knowledge of Montana and Western history, including its historiography and research sources.
  • Knowledge of modern archives theory, standards, and practices and their implementation.
  • Ability to perform research and provide reference services to diverse audiences.
  • Writing and communication skills, especially the ability to make complex ideas accessible to the public.
  • Public presentation skills.
  • Ability to work well with a team as both a leader and contributing member.
  • Ability to interact well with Library visitors.
  • Ability to meet the advertised physical requirements, including climbing, crouching, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, repetitive hand and finger movements, moving, touching, communicating, hearing detailed information, and seeing with color and depth perception.
  • Ability to move and stand for several hours at a time.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to inquiries from individuals, state agencies, professionals, educational groups, local organizations, and institutions by conducting research and providing information in person, by phone, mail, and email on a broad range of topics.
  • Assist researchers with research objectives and access to Library & Archives resources.
  • Help supervise Library & Archives collections in the public reference room.
  • Conduct educational tours of the Library & Archives for researchers, classes, staff, and others.
  • Create and maintain databases, web pages, tutorials, guides, and other print and electronic resources for staff, patrons, students, and the public on conducting research and various topics of Montana history.
  • Advise patrons on copyright and digital rights laws, policies, procedures, and issues associated with Library & Archives materials and resource use.
  • Deliver public programs and outreach about the Library & Archives collection.
  • Return items used in the Reference Room to their appropriate home locations for future retrieval.
  • Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the online catalog and finding aids by reviewing and editing records and creating new records when appropriate.
  • Assist processing archivists with arrangement and description of collections over 10 linear feet.
  • Assist accessioning archivists with rehousing incoming donations.
  • Maintain physical control of unprocessed collections by ensuring they are properly labeled and entered in ArchivesSpace.
